Since we’re talking about fresh produce this week (cooking and growing!), we need to know where to get it, right?

I believe that the best produce is fresh produce – you’ll notice I often prepare recipes using seasonal ingredients, as they tend to be the freshest and taste the best when prepared soon after picking.

So here are my top 5 places to get that fresh produce:

1. Grow it yourself.   Let’s face it, it doesn’t get any fresher than that!  asparagus 002(and yes, that is a greenhouse in my kitchen – my husband loves gardening . . .)

2. Farmer’s market.  This is a fun family outing and you can talk to the farmers to determine how they are growing their produce and what is the best to purchase each week. Go to Local Harvest to find a farmer’s market near you.

3.  U-Pick Farms.    We have a lot of fun picking our blueberries, peaches and blackberries for the year when we visit my SIL in Georgia.  We buy enough to last us all winter – just freeze it and enjoy!

4.  A CSA or local delivery.   I’m lucky enough to live in an area with Green Bean Delivery.  They supplement my produce (and supply my eggs) by coming by every other week.  I can pick what I want in my container, and if I’m gone for a week or two I can suspend delivery.  The convenience is wonderful!  I know many others who love their local CSA, so I definitely encourage you to check to see if there are any in your area.

5.  Shop the sales at the supermarket.  When you have no other resources, shop the sales at your local supermarket.   The in-season produce tends to cost less, so it tends to be on sale – many supermarkets now also label where their produce comes from – so sometimes you CAN find local (or at least regional) produce doing your normal grocery shopping!
