Continuing on with my desired feeling of connection this year, last month I re-read The 5 Love  Never Stop GrowingLanguages of Children, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts and Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World.  These are all fabulous books that I had read before, but this month I dove in with the intention of applying the principles to my daily life.

In order to do this, for the love languages book, first I had to determine WHAT were the love languages of my family.  According to the series, there are five main love languages and most people feel love more strongly with one or two of them.  The five areas are: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Physical Touch, Quality Time and Gifts.

On Valentine’s Day I made a yummy dinner for the family and got them each a small gift.  After dinner we all took the quizzes in the two books – everyone thought it was fun and a good idea – I didn’t get any eye-rolling.

The results were not super shocking – although VERY interesting.  We talked a bit about how although we all love giving and receiving love in all five areas, it’s especially important to show love to each other based upon our individual top areas.  It was a fun evening, and I think we are all a little more conscientious about showing love to each other in meaningful ways.  I found it eye-opening to see that I tend to show love in MY top languages – although I do a fair job of all of them.  Good to know and something I can change immediately.

Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World is another favorite book of mine.  I can’t tell you how many people I’ve purchased it for or encouraged to read it.  I’m not going to go into an in-depth review (I reviewed it a while ago HERE), but I’ve re-committed to saying YES when it’s right and going all in.  After all, love isn’t just talk.  Love does.

What have you read lately that you’ve tried to implement in your life?  And how do you show love to your family?  I’d love to hear your ideas!
